Balanced or Unbalanced?
With the fixed timing of the 2 cam design variant it was argued by the inventor and subsequent engineers that the engine was balanced. Even the RadMax engineers claimed that their variant is ‘completely balanced at all speeds and loads and free of destructive harmonics’. I argued with Jim numerous times about this and pointed out that the power strokes occur and 202.5 on one side of the rotor and 292.5 on the other side. I pointed out that they were not 180 degrees apart and not symmetrical or in phase. They are 90 degrees out of phase.
Even adding vanes like University of West Virginia and Radian would not solve this problem. Adding another rotor to balance it may work. The Wankel engineers had to add a rotor to the design to make it work, otherwise it would try spin backwards.
I suspect this phase difference is responsible for the failure of RadMax prototypes and is giving the design engineers fits.
